confirmed, -ac ffmp3 gives some clues:

mdb:511, lastbuf:63 skiping granule 0
mdb:511, lastbuf:63 skiping granule 0
mdb:511, lastbuf:63 skiping granule 1
mdb:511, lastbuf:63 skiping granule 1
invalid new backstep 581

see if -ac ffmp3 works better on your files?

Forgot to tell, ffmp3 doesn't work better than mp3lib

Maybe my ears are just bad, but it sounds ok to me.
The first sample sounds a bit strange in mpg123 and mp3lib and a bit better in ffmp3.
Note that MPlayer can use other decoders like libmad and also libmpg123 nowadays.
