some of mplayer's demuxers are unmaintained.
mplayer is slowly changing to use lavf's demuxers.
its better if you try the files (or even use zzuf yourself) with svn ffmpeg / ffplay and submit crash reports to http://roundup.mplayerhq.hu so they can be fixed.

Reminder (4 years later): while most of the issues seem to be fixed, lol-mplayer.ogg still causes mplayer to crash with Signal 11.

That's in the included tremor copy. No sense it trying to fix it, it needs to be removed.
Use --disable-tremor-internal to avoid it.

Changed the default to disabled for our ancient included tremor decoder, will probably remove it soonish.
I'll declare that a fix for the issue.
Change was done in r35213.
