This happens with all audio files I have tried, including all MP3, Ogg Vorbis, WMA, WAV, and FLAC files. None of them show the elapsed time.
I am using the latest SVN version, compiled from source for x86-64 Linux, which at the time I posted this bug report was MPlayer SVN-r33563-4.5. The current openSUSE 11.3 Packman build (MPlayer dev-SVN-r33574-4.5-openSUSE Linux 11.3 (x86_64)-Packman) and all other recent Packman builds also have the same problem.

Yes, the feature only works correctly for video files but audio-only files show both duration and elapsed time while playing.

Problem still exists with today's SVN version (SVN-r37609-4.8). Any chance someone could take a look at this issue?

Fixed (though the value displayed may in some cases be a few seconds off still) by r37778
what filetype is it ?
what mplayer version?
no files report correct elapsed time for you ?
