Description
I use mencoder from ubuntu feisty repos, I followed the offical docs to encode a DVD or VCD compliant mpeg file:
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/menc-feat-vcd-dvd.html
It plays nicely with mplayer, gstreamer or xine, but it won't play at all with Windows Media Player. If it is a VCD compliant mpg it says "Damaged format" without even trying to get the codec...

I see your point but maybe it's only a problem of a label missing in a header... like the "-ffourcc DX50" when encoding DivX... if so it should be quite easy to solve...
Anyway I think the mplayer team should find a solution because even if the MPEG files produced by mencoder are VCD or DVD standard compliant, this is quite useless when you want to pass a video to others: keep on mind that WMP is still the most used player, so it actually impose a "standard de facto" which mencoder should be able to comply...

just to clarify: yes i agree, mencoder should output some files that wmp can play.
likewise for realplayer and quicktime.
just that no one cares to fix it.
and mencoder has been unmaintained for some time now.
patches welcome. known bug, etc
