gmplayer loaded with test video file, gmplayer fails to detect/init hardware mixer (alsa), video stopped, then right click player > segfault

mplayer test.mkv detects the hardware mixer correctly in r37257 resulting in audio playback. I've included a short log from commandline below and highlighted small differences.
No segfault occured in r37257 when right-clicking (MOUSE_BTN2) on an open video window when a file is loaded with the command "mplayer" or "gmplayer". It is not possible to reproduce the same condition with mplayer because when you stop a video with mplayer you effectively quit, and the process is exited. In the log below you will see that I initiated mplayer test.mkv, then I attempted to right click an open video window during playback. The MOUSE_BTN2 input was recognized, but no actual menu is drawn (because this is not gmplayer). Several seconds later I pressed the hotkey 'q' to stop the video, and the process exits.
The segfault was only reproduced in gmplayer while right-clicking (MOUSE_BTN2) on a open skinned player if a video is stopped or if no video is loaded.

(The mentioned segmentation fault when the video is stopped probably never occurred when stopping gmplayer by pressing 'q' and should have gone with the menu meanwhile. If not, please re-open #2201.)

I'm fine with that, but no prior mention requesting an update to the latest revision was made before this post. You also requested information about the segfault in your last post, hence my response. I should probably not have included a backtrace in the initial bugreport for a condition that is unrelated and I apologize for that.
I should have clarified this before, but the no audio output regression in gmplayer is present no matter what device driver is utilized (alsa, sdl, openal)
I did observe one condition where gmplayer will load audio. (log included at end of post)

You apparently are using audio output driver oss with pure MPlayer and alsa (?) with gmplayer.
My appologies, i did not include ao='devicedriver' in my mplayer config. mplayer was possibly defaulting to oss on its own.
I should also mention ..
~/.mplayer/config > when ao=<audiodriver> is commented out or not included > audio output
~/.mplayer/config > ao=oss > no audio output.
~/.mplayer/gui.conf > ao_driver=oss > no audio output.
This seems to be consistent with the error observed in one of my earlier logs when no audio driver was configured in ~/.mplayer/config. mplayer defaulted to the oss driver. oss driver was not found or could not initialize, mplayer then switched to the next driver alsa, and loaded the alsa driver

I should have clarified this before, but the no audio output regression in gmplayer is present no matter what device driver is utilized (alsa, sdl, openal)
I should also mention ..
~/.mplayer/config > when ao=<audiodriver> is commented out or not included > audio output
~/.mplayer/config > ao=oss > no audio output.
~/.mplayer/gui.conf > ao_driver=oss > no audio output.
So you are saying, that ao=alsa in ~/.mplayer/config
will work and ao_driver=alsa in ~/.mplayer/gui.conf
won't?
I did observe one condition where gmplayer will load audio. (log included at end of post)

in earlier mplayer builds softvol='yes' in gui.conf would respect the mastervolume setting when gmplayer is launched. In recent revisions, initial audio output is broken, but stopping the video, and then pressing play will return audio.

softvol='no' sets mastervolume to 0% every time gmplayer is launched. There is audio output, but you have to increase the volume every time you launch a video.

We are dealing with two different issues here, none of which is a bug.
- If you are using softvol, you are forcing the software mixer instead of using the sound card mixer. Hence you are getting the message "[Mixer] No hardware mixing, inserting volume filter."
- Since r37055, the GUI utilizes the default for the volume as given in the skin configuration. The skin you are using sets this default to zero, which is why you don't hear anything:
hpotmeter = pos_, 8, 14, NULL, 100, 0, 5,50, 31, 13, evSetVolume
Simply set the default to something like 75%:
hpotmeter = pos_, 8, 14, NULL, 100, 75, 5,50, 31, 13, evSetVolume

Can you explain why no audio output occurs when softvol='yes' is configured in gui.conf ? This is the issue. Whether or not the issue was defined correctly in the title of the bug report, gmplayer fails initially to produce sound when launching a video when softvol='yes' is configured in gui.conf.
Prior to some recent commit (maybe r37055), when softvol='yes' was configured in gui.conf, gmplayer would respect the master volume setting of the host OS and output audio when a video was initially launched. gmplayer is now broken when softvol='yes' is configured in gui.conf. This bug is reproduceable 100% of the time with a large number of skins.
Closing the ticket doesn't resolve this issue. I would contest that marking this as invalid only ignores the reported bug.

Why should mplayer not respect the current system volume setting? This change, which I don't completely understand its relevance ( or not) to softvol='no' , would essentially force users to configure skins to set a default audio level. The majority of non-technical users will not be familiar with skin configuration files to know what to adjust. While this option is nice, it should not be the default method to set volume on initialization, and it would be better suited for configuration in gmplayer GUI preferences ( or directly in gui.conf ).

There is no relationship between a skin and option softvol. The GUI actually doesn't handle softvol at all, it's just a MPlayer option.
So you are saying you did the following step by step (please confirm):
- Update to the latest svn revision.
- Change 3am_black_compiz to a default volume of 75% (as stated above).
- Delete your ~/.mplayer/gui.conf.
- Call
gmplayer -noconfig gui test.mkv
and get audio. - Change to softvol=yes in ~/.mplayer/gui.conf, call
gmplayer test.mkv
and get no audio?
